Reese speaks in a relentlessly perky voice it comes as no surprise that she used to be a cheerleader in high school. So, for both of the stars, there really is only one question. As for Josh Lucas, a blonde, blue-eyed hunk, he was fresh off the set from A Beautiful Mind. Reese's Legally Blonde was a fluffy fun film but with Election she showed that she knew how to pick razor sharp scripts. And they know what it is like to do decent films. But the problem with Sweet Home Alabama is that the two lead actors, Reese Witherspoon and Josh Lucas, are bright individuals. It has always been an unjust world great films have flopped and duds have 'plummeted' to the top. Films are like a strange mystical science and William Goldman's line is always relevant nobody knows anything. 'It's a romantic comedy and it has done great business in the States.' Since when did box office figures denote quality? Since never. 'It is a smart commercial move,' one film journalist explained to me. The film is brimming with cliches and the script is so maddeningly predictable that watching it, you just want to ask one question why did they do it? It is as black and white as that.Īnd of course, it is packaged off with the irresistably catchy song Sweet Home Alabama. The Big Apple is bad for her and good old-fashioned values and a slow paced way of life is presented as the best way to go. And yes, you've guessed it, Melanie realises what a horrible person she has become. (No longer is she Melanie Smooter but Melanie Carmichael.) When she goes back to her home town, and is not granted an instant divorce, she has to prolong her stay. With her move to the city, she has transformed into a sophisticated woman and re-named herself.

She then goes home, back to her roots, in the simple town of Alabama and tries to get a divorce from her estranged husband, Jake. It is the story of an up-and-coming fashion designer in New York who is about to get engaged to her big shot boyfriend.

The two do not necessarily go hand in hand: Sweet Home Ala bama being a case in point. But please do not surmise that if the tills are ringing then it must be a great movie. They are of immense importance, in Hollywood particularly. As an actor once told me: 'That expression 'There's no business like show business.' Ever notice that the word business is used twice?' I would be a naive soul if I said that bums on seats did not matter. It stars Reese Witherspoon and Josh Lucas and did great box office business in the States.
